在我国历史上曾发生过数次农民起义运动，但规模最大影响最深的一次应该是由洪秀全发动领导的太平天国农民起义运动。太平军于癸好三年（1853年）攻克南京（改称天京）之后，即开始铸造自己的货币。 [3]

2、有一种极稀见之小圆钱，径2.2厘米，缘郭整齐。面文直书“天国”二字，背文直书“圣宝”二字，形扁而润，“天”字上划特长宝盖头更润，在南京附近多有发现，为第一种类稍后之钱。

3、 楷书圣宝钱。钱文楷书，作“太平天国”，直读，背书“圣宝”二字，直读，因此也俗称“真圣宝”，黄铜，阔轮。书法铸工铜质均佳。钱径2.5厘米，2.8厘 米，3.5厘米，较大的有5厘米的，锉磨精细，颇为美观。另有一种大钱，文字铜质与上类相似，可能为一时一地所出，是否为常用钱，则难以判断。这一套“王 品钱”在安徽，江苏多有发现。

4、宋体圣宝钱。钱文排列式与前一类相同，只是钱文改用仿宋体，书法颇美，铜色发白，含锡量大，分量较优生，而锉磨较差，从表现看来，略亿砂铜，这一系统似有四等钱，窄轮大字，别具风格，多发现在湖南一带，可能为太平军将领所铸。

5、隐起文背圣宝。钱文与前一类相同，背文“圣宝”二字横列。书法隐起，阔轮，黄铜，也分为四等，比前套略轻，在湖南北部多有发现。

6、厚肉楷书太平天国钱，背文圣宝二字直列，书法平平，铜色较差，铸工尚佳，有大小多种，但都为小平钱，只因减重而形成大小不一。

7、楷书横列圣宝钱，其面文排列为，右“太”左“平”，上“天”下“国”。在我国古钱中，颇为独特，背文“圣宝”横列，书法一般。有大小两种，其间略有差异。多在江西，浙江一带发现。另有一面文上“天”下“国”右“圣”，背横列“太平”者。

8、大平圣宝钱，面文“太平圣宝”，楷书顺读，背文“天国”，横书。有大小两品，黄色泛白。数量较多，多发现于南京一带。太平天国钱币是我国近代史上的一笔宝贵的文化遗产，但因现今大平天国钱币伪作太多，鱼龙混杂，给钱币研究工作造成了很大因难。
